Algonquin Bay – 2011 Gold Kitchen

To rejuvenate their 35 year old bungalow the couple wanted to open up the 800 sq. ft. public area of their main floor. The concept was to create a relationship between the kitchen and dining areas by removing the wall that now separated them. An expanded kitchen replaced the out-of-date model, while a functional central island incorporates comfortable seating for five, a built-in cook top, with overhead extractor hood. Against the retained interior wall the fridge, wall ovens, and generous pull-out pantry are located. Across the island on the exterior wall a re-located window over the stainless steel sink is surrounded by upper and lower cabinets. The quartz countertop in this area is topped with a glass tile backsplash which pulls the elements together.
Morley – 2010 Silver Kitchen

The owner wanted to modernize her dated kitchen, the concept was to create a series of multi-tasking stations with more work surface area. The entire kitchen was gutted, the insulation was updated on the exterior walls, and the kitchen was reconfigured while keeping the kitchen sink and the fridge in the same location. The existing floor was removed and replaced with reclaimed hardwood flooring. The cabinets were finished in a maple shaker style with a granite countertop and a light brown tile backsplash against a white porcelain sink for contrast. Stainless steel appliances and a microwave hood extractor replaced the old units. The island, breakfast prep area, wine rack and liquor storage all contributed to the acute organization of the space. Bulkheads at various heights were added for visual interest and to accommodate the recessed lighting.

The clients were both accomplished cooks and were unhappy with their existing kitchen; they desired a gas range as the focal point of their new kitchen/dining area. The walls were reinsulated to meet today’s standards and a dual casement window was replaced with double garden doors. The compact kitchen area was finished with a crown moulding, recessed halogen lighting, granite countertop, tile backsplash and painted cabinets. The hardwood floor was refinished and a stainless steel range hood completed the overall appearance.

The middle aged couple wanted an open concept plan, so the walls between the existing living room, dining room, and kitchen were eliminated. The previous stippled ceiling with one light fixture was redone and various pot lights were inserted to define the space. An open style kitchen with island was designed with room for bar stool seating. Plenty of storage space was created by adding cherry-stain cupboards. A bar station with bar sink, wine cooler and hutch was built in close proximity. The entire main floor carpet was removed and replaced with maple hardwood flooring.

The existing kitchen compromised a large area but was poorly laid out. The walls between the kitchen, living room, and stairs were eliminated to create an open concept. The space was rearranged to have a tighter work triangle, and millwork was built on an angle at the entrance to make the kitchen feel more open. An island was built complete with a hybrid range stove, glass range hood and prep space on either side, adjacent eating area for four on opposite side. The old cabinets were replaced with modern dark wood cabinets from floor to ceiling with frosted glass inserts in selected doors, and a granite countertop was added.

The entire kitchen was gutted to the framing. The exterior West wall was completely removed and cantilevered out 24”. A 20′ steel I beam was installed to span the entire kitchen wall to allow for a seamless, continuous window wall. The existing layout was reworked to accommodate a centrally located island which housed a gas stove, with popup exhaust hood and eating area. The kitchen walls were lined with floor to ceiling cabinets in a clear maple finish. Countertops and backsplashes were finished in granite. Recessed pot lights were installed to give appropriate lighting to all work surfaces. Included in the cabinets were pull-out mixer and bowl, trash compactor, recycling center, and wine rack.
