Bartlet – 2009 Gold Bathrooms

The homeowner’s last remaining child had recently left home and they were looking for a complete makeover on the upper level of their storey and a half home. They wanted to create a spa atmosphere and getaway within this space. The upper storey now features a new four piece bathroom with walk through change area and adjacent sleeping quarters. The space includes his & her vanity area complete with claw-foot tub, dual-flush toilet, recessed halogen lighting and multi-functional cabinets. Curved bulkheads and an artist inspired glass wall contribute to the overall feel of movement within the space.

The sole bathroom in this residence was in dire need of a facelift. The original fixtures were relocated to give the room a better spatial arrangement. All exterior walls were stripped to the studs and reinsulated with R14 Roxul batts and 1” rigid s.m. All lighting was upgraded and glass blocks were installed in place of a small double hung window. A large vanity and mirror were added as the focal point of the room.

The young couple were welcoming their first child and wanted to reinvent the existing 2 piece bathroom that was adjacent to their master and expectant child’s bedrooms. As the existing area was housed in a small dormer on the South side of their Riverview home, a plan evolved to quadruple the size of the existing space and change the entire aesthetic. A large vanity was added along with a new glass shower enclosure, dual flush toilet and diamond shaped jetted tub. A large triangular window was installed to give them an inspiring view of the Southern sky. And of course adding this window created a feeling of open space where previously the small 2 piece bath was claustrophobic.

This dated bathroom was quite small (59”x93”) and dark. An elongated awning window was added to allow natural light in; doing this immediately changed the bathroom’s ambience. The fixture layout remained the same but an air-jetted tub replaced the existing enamel unit. A dual-flush toilet and new sink and taps replaced the existing inefficient fixtures. Storage space was realized with the addition of maple shaker cabinets while curving bulkheads were added to house the new recessed lighting and exhaust fan in the ceiling. A programmable thermostat and heat mat were installed to warm the 12”x12” marble floor tiles.

The ensuite bathroom although still in good condition was showing its age. The existing room was completely gutted, insulation upgrades were added. The fixture layout worked in its present configuration. A new clawfoot tub, tempered glass shower stall, dual-flush toilet and large vanity were added for a minimalist effect.

This new bathroom was created in the basement to service the 2 new bedrooms that had been added to the lower level. An existing basement window allowed entry of natural light into the space. A tub/shower combo was added along with a dual flush toilet, and new sink and vanity. A bulkhead was built to house the exhaust fan and recessed pot lights.

The existing main floor bathroom was a good size, 8′x9′. The client’s main requirement was to make the bathroom wheelchair accessible. For the renovation, all of the existing fixtures and finishes were removed and the space was stripped to the studs. A large 66”x40” wheelchair accessible shower stall was created where the previous tub had been. A wall hung sink replaced the existing while two matching vanities were created for either side. The necessary grab bars were installed and the shower pan was positioned flush with the existing floor for ease of entry.

The client wanted to create a bathroom that would service the lower level development as well as a new bedroom adjacent to it. In addition to the dual-flush toilet, sink and vanity, a large jetted tub was installed. Black and white contrasting tile was chosen to give the space some (not so serious) appeal.
